The Benefits of Dry Firewood
Many wonder why they should buy dry firewood when they are seeing offers for cheaper wet wood. But what they don’t realise is the many issues with wet wood and the problems it can bring. So in this guide we'll discuss all the ways in which dry wood is better. And the benefits it presents when burnt.
Rules & Regulations
There are a lot of regulations around firewood and what you are allowed to burn in your stoves. As well as councils having their own laws, such as clean air zones.
For starters not only is it illegal for them to sell you wet wood, also the burning of wet wood for heating your home has been made illegal from the start of 2023 in the UK. Which if found can result in fines or worse. Also if you live in a clean air area, then you can only burn firewood on the ready to burn scheme and defra approved smokeless coals.
Easy To Light & Burn
Dry firewood is much easier to light than wet wood, allowing for a lot less hassle and ease of use. Not only that but dry firewood is a lot easier to keep burning, you won’t have to mess around with any vents or have to keep prodding and moving it. You can just stack it up, light it and leave it; then in no time you have a toasty blazing fire.
Which means you not only save time but also money on both kindling and firelighters, as well as using less wood trying to get your fire going.
No Pests or Rot
Wet wood can harbour not only pollutants but other hitchhikers. From spiders to ants, to woodlice, your wet wood can be turned into a nice nest by a wide number of insects and other pests. And these pests will be more than happy to turn your nice warm home into theirs as well. If you are already having trouble with pests then we do sell a range of high quality pesticides that you may find handy.
Wet wood also has a tendency to rot, even if there is no visible rot, wood often rots from the inside out. Leaving you with a nasty surprise when you put your logs in the fire and instead of getting a nice firewood aroma you are left with a musky, damp, bitter smell. Even worse are the spores that could be being released into the air, depending on what is growing in your wood.
Less Smoke & Soot
Dry wood is a lot better for air quality as well as releasing a lot less smoke when burnt. This means that any people or animals around the fire will be at a lot lower risk of breathing in any harmful smoke. Smoke which can lead to a multitude of health issues including lung diseases and it is also carcinogenic.
Furthermore because your fire will be burning cleaner wood, this means there will be a lot less of a build up of soot or creosote inside of your stove. Making less mess for you, so you won’t have to clean it out as much or call in flue specialists as often.
Higher Heat & More Consistent Burn
Another great benefit of dried firewood is that it provides a higher heat burn, making for a toastier, cosy fire. While also providing a more consistent burn, as a dry firewood is both easier to light and doesn’t suffer from sputtering and going out. Where with wet wood, you have to burn off any liquid first to then get your wood to burn well.
Another thing that people don’t consider is that most wet wood is also softwood. Which not only burns a lot quicker than hardwood, it also produces a lot of resins and gases when burnt. Which are both bad for you and your stove's health.
Better For The Environment
Last but not least, burning dry firewood is much better for the environment. This is because dry firewood contains a lot less contaminants and produces a lot less smoke when it is burnt. Meaning a lot less pollutants are put into the atmosphere when you burn dry logs.
Kiln dried wood is a great carbon neutral heat source, that is both efficient but also an enjoyable way of heating your home. When taken from FSC certified sustainable sources, this fuel is perfect for heating your home.
That concludes the benefits of dry firewood and why you should pick it over inferior options like wet wood.
