This firewood is kiln dried for 7 days and has a moisture content lower than 20%. It is an excellent firewood and offers real value for money.

All of our firewood is certified with the Ready to Burn scheme, our certificate number is: WS480/00001. This gives you peace of mind that all of our firewood is properly kiln dried, and has a moisture content of 20% or less.

Description

Hornbeam, one of our newer firewood options, has a nickname of ‘Ironwood’. As you might guess from that nickname, hornbeam is a very strong and very dense type of firewood.

It burns very similar to oak and beech firewood, so you can expect a long burn duration with a very high heat output.

Hornbeam firewood has a similar appearance to ash firewood; however, it is much heavier and has a similar calorific value to oak logs. Because of the density of this firewood, it can be trickier to light than the likes of birch firewood (which is softer). That being said, once the firewood is burning away, you can sit back and enjoy the heat output from this long burning log. If you find that you are refuelling your wood burner often, this could be the right log species for you!

Because of the hardness of this firewood, it is often used for furniture and flooring. The hardness firewood directly affects the burn duration. We would consider this to be an excellent type of firewood, and would recommend this to all customers looking for a firewood that offers a longer burn time.

As with all our wood products, hornbeam is kiln dried to give a moisture content of less than 20%. It will give a nice, smouldering flame when burning, and doesn’t spit or give off a lot of smoke. It is also FSC certified, giving you the peace of mind that this firewood is sustainable and sourced responsibly.

How to use:

As mentioned above, this firewood is dense. This means that it takes a little longer to get going, but once it does, you’ll notice you have to refuel the fire a lot less often than softer types of wood.

To start the fire, lay the base with kindling and firelighters. Make sure to let a good amount of air into the fire, and that your kindling is flaming away before adding a couple of logs of hornbeam.
